w Haley ELC 754 The University of North Carolina at Greensboro Critical Analysis of The Hidden Leader: Leadership Lessons on the Potential Within Prior to the school year starting my wife shared with me an article she read regarding five characteristics of successful business people. One area she shared stuck with me as something I have not incorporated enough in my adult life. We all make excuses for how busy we are and how we do not have time in our life to add something else even if it may increase our productivity in a variety of arenas. When she talked to me about journaling as a means to reflect on my day I half-heartedly paid attention. Anyone who is married knows that it is hard to ignore advice from your spouse specifically if it is something you can do just before you go to sleep. Eventually I gave and the five to ten minutes I spending reflecting on my interactions of the day has been a life changer. Superior leaders reflect on their experiences and create leadership lessons base on what they have learned. When I read the section Implications for Leaders I immediately thought back to my conversation with my wife and how valuable this practice has been for me the first couple months of the school year. It is not as if I have never reflected on my work, but to purposefully spend time reflecting on situations from the day is life changing. Edgar Allen Poe’s writing style was not well received during his life time, however his writing gained recognition as time passed turning him into a famous figure in the world of literature. Born in 1809, Poe died at the young age of 40 in 1849. Poe was one of the first writers to use short stories as a serious literary style. Most readers are unaware of the vast symbolism in Poe’s writing, but do enjoy the tonality and imagery he creates. Attention to detail and imagination allowed Edgar Allan Poe to influence a new style of writing in the nineteenth-century, and create some of the finest fictional horror stories which gained him recognition, although mostly after his death. Edgar Allan Poe’s writing differed from most writers during his time period. He was often critical of his contemporaries, as most writers wrote with the purpose to teach or instruct readers or make a religious or political statement. Poe believed literature was to be simply for the reader’s amusement. Due to his dislike for this didactic style of writing, he preferred writing horror short stories with the use of his imagination, which would impact the future of literature. Because Poe did not write like most of his contemporaries, he failed to have his work highly regarded by established literary people of his day. If the work is in a high position they can be demoted due to the team player that is doing more than what is expected. Valuable In many ways I will say that a team player is valuable. They are valuable to a company because in most cases the team player keeps the company afloat. In many companies the President, CEO, or supervisors always want to keep their team players. Some companies will not let their valuable player go due to competition. Being a valuable asset is very important because it looks good a resume that you are part of a team and that you can work well with others. In most companies you have to be a team player to help the company succeed. So by the potential employer already seeing this on a resume is a plus.
